An insulated ball bearing is engineered with a non-conductive coating or ceramic layer that prevents electrical currents from passing through the bearing and thereby minimizes the chance of early failure through electrical erosion. Such bearings are used very commonly in electric motors, generators, and in many industrial applications where electrical insulation is necessary.
